DISTINCTIONS:Low branched small tree with horizontal branching; dark green leaves turn reddish purple in autumn; large 3”-4” white flowers in May; red fruit in autumn; needs moist acidic well-drained soils and partial shade.
LIMITATIONS:Susceptible to insect and disease if grown in inappropriate locations; only successful in warmest portion of SE.
HARDINESS:SE (Zone 5)
ORIGIN:Massachusetts to Florida
CULTIVARS:Numerous cultivars available; most popular include: ‘Cherokee Chief’ deep red flowers; ‘Cloud Nine’ better hardiness and flowers at younger age; ‘Rubra’ pink flowers.
