DISTINCTIONS:Smaller tree than Japanese tree lilac; loose spreading to rounded form; lightly fragrant creamy white flowers, not a true lilac smell, flowers earlier than Japanese tree lilac; often multi-stemmed form; smooth to exfoliating bark; sun; pH 6.0-7.5; resistant to powdery mildew; persistent seed capsules; fall color depends on cultivar.
LIMITATIONS:Susceptible to leaf miner in SE.
HARDINESS:SC, SE (Zone 4)
ORIGIN:Northern China
CULTIVARS:‘Zhang Zhiming’ (Beijing Gold™) given to the Morton Arboretum in Illinois by the Beijing Botanical Garden; vigorous growth; primrose-yellow flowers; cinnamon-colored bark; yellow-gold fall color; 20' tall, 15' wide.; ‘Morton’ (China Snow® Water Tower®) upright habit; white flowers; 35' tall, 30' wide.
